Located on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, the Heart of Midlothian marks the site of the Old Tollbooth building, which once served as the capital’s prison. Known as a site of punishment and injustice, the Tollbooth had a dark reputation and is woven into the fabric of Edinburgh’s somewhat gory history. The Edinburgh football club Hearts, founded in 1874, was, of course, named after it too!
